Photos of the Chautauqua Institution, August 25, 2011

This is the first of at least four posts of photos from my recent week at the Chautauqua Institution. The first three will be a sample of some of the homes and small apartment buildings in The institution is a 740 acre resort on the northwestern shore of Chautauqua Lake in western New York, about an hour and a half drive southwest of Buffalo, about 130 miles northeast of Cleveland, and about 160 miles north of Pittsburgh. You can learn more about it the place at their website, CIWeb.org

The domestic architecture of the Chautauqua Institution is picturesque, and the styles are dominated in its core districts by the Arts & Crafts or, as it is known in the USA, the American Craftsman movement. This is unsurprising since the Institution is not far from East Aurora, NY, where the influential Roycroft Community was located.

I am not terribly happy with my photos. They were shot hand held, with fairly short exposures. They are an accidental selection, determined by what I passed during a desultory stroll through the community the afternoon before I was leaving for home.
